John Walker Find Your Field Of Dreams Community Swim

Did you know that Swimgym is the sole swim lesson provider for the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Community Swim programme? This is a programme that offers free swimming lessons to all schools in the old Manukau City Region year round and during the summer months in Hamilton, Waiuku and on Waiheke Island. The numbers are staggering - we have up to 91 schools a year, with over 22,000 swimmers, doing 162,000 lessons per year. There are up to 35 staff delivering these lessons, in a total of 13 council and school pools every year. We also offer in partnership with WERO White Water Park the opportunity for 1600 Year 6 children to gain confidence and skills to be better prepared safely in the water.

Katherine Sugarman and her awesome team of swim teaching stars manage and run the programme. All of our teachers have a first aid certificate, are qualified to an NZQA recognized standard and many are qualified beyond that with speciality courses from Swimming NZ or Austswim.

Swimgym helps support the fundraising effort with the data it provides to funders, its involvement in the Water Safety NZ Water Skills for Life Database and contributing to fundraising ventures. Profits from the programme are reinvested back into the programme by supplying supplementary unfunded lessons. Examples are the development of the Coastguard Boating Education programme for Year 6’s. Swimgym also runs a Performance Link camp during the holidays for 30 selected swimmers who have shown potential.

While these lessons are a Swimgym developed program, if your school is involved in the Community Swim Programme, we would recommend you use these lessons in addition to your child’s normal lessons. You will be surprised how much progress they will make swimming twice a week.
